OUR HISTORY
  • 1979

The National Agricultural Exchange (BNA) was established as a mixed economy company, with the participation of government agencies, state companies, as well as trade groups and associations. The Exchange received broad support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Idema, which, as the official entity in charge of marketing agricultural products in the country, participated as one more operator within the mechanism, thereby facilitating its market regulation action.

  • 1989

Upon completion of the first ten years, both the private sector and the government saw the Exchange as the clearest body for price formation, to comply with negotiations and as a source of true market information. The consolidation was reflected in a change in its corporate capital, giving greater participation to the private sector and reducing state intervention, which corroborated the interest of individuals in acting in a market that was beginning to glimpse a very promising future. In August 1991, the government issued decree 2000 that regulated the agricultural product exchanges, allowing, among other aspects, transactions on certificates representing products, rights and services. With the purpose of offering financing opportunities, a program for the sale and repurchase of Warehouse Receipts (CDM) was designed, which provides liquidity to the owners of said merchandise, constituting a fundamental step towards a hedging and investment market for agricultural products in Colombia.

The adjustments made gave way to the transition stage in which the 1997-2000 Strategic Plan was designed, which adapted the mission, vision and strategic and institutional objectives to market conditions and sought to position the Exchange as the central pillar of the agricultural products market in Colombia. Under these conditions, the Clearing House (CC Mercantil) was established. In this way, new backing was offered regarding seriousness and guarantees in the performance of negotiations.

  • 2002

With the enactment of Decree 573 of 2002, the Agricultural and Agroindustrial Product Exchanges were restored to their character as actors in the stock market, which subjected the Exchange to the inspection and oversight of what is now the Financial Superintendency of Colombia.

  • 2005

With the enactment of Law 964 of 2005, Commodity Exchanges were defined as a commodity trading forum and authorized the National Government to regulate the functioning of these Exchanges, their operations, and their intermediaries.

  • 2010

The National Agricultural Exchange (BNA) changed its corporate name to the Colombian Mercantile Exchange (BMC). Through its member brokerage companies, it offers investors different options for the placement of their resources, and alternative instruments to obtain liquidity that allow them to advance their productive activities to agricultural, agribusiness and other commodity producers.

  • 2014

As a process of optimization and modernization of the commodities market and, in order to make the operation of the Exchange more effective, the decision was made to centralize the settlement and clearing processes from February 2014, from that moment The Mercantile Compensation Chamber, created in 1997 as a holding company of the company, was liquidated.

  • 2015

The Exchange became the Manager of the Natural Gas Market in Colombia by winning a government tendering process. The Market provides information, transparency, and tools necessary to issue public policies in the gas industry.

  • 2020

The Exchange began a transformation process aimed at strengthening business lines and entering new markets, in addition to winning for the second time the tender for the Natural Gas Market Manager in Colombia 2021 – 2026.
